Advanced Healing Detox: Day 1

Day 1

Today is day one of my attempt at a 22 day cellular level detox. My chiropractor, Dr. Daniel Gonzalez, has organized a detox challenge/support group for patients from his office who were interested in improving their health. There are basically three different levels of the cleanse, and you can choose the intensity that best suits yours needs and is most accessable to you. I'm shooting for the level 3, Advanced Healing Diet to try and get the most bang for my buck.

It won't be perfect, but it's a good bar and a great start to cleaning up my diet even more and healing my body from the inside out. Detoxing via food has been an on-going, on and off practice for me since January, and I have employed similar detox diets to varying degrees over the course of the year. My first experience in using food to detox was in May of 2008 and I had amazing results within five weeks that showed me just how dramatic an impact our food consumption has on our overall well being. We spend so many years of our lives growing accustom to ailments that often originate with, or are exacerbated by our poor food choices and come to believe that we either just have to tolerate ill health as a side effect of aging or find pharmaceuticals to mask the symptoms so that we can carry on and return to a sense of normalcy in our lives.

The Skinny

So, in a nutshell, I'll be avoiding grains, dairy, sugars and non-berry fruits. I can have vegetables, nuts, seeds, berries and high quality (I stress, organic/grass fed/free range, etc.) meat. The meat part will surely be the hardest for me as I'm not much of a meat eater to begin with and many of my past detoxes were vegan. I take that back, all of it will be hard. Grains are everywhere and it's really hard to find things that don't contain wheat. No processed foods, no microwaves, only certain oils for cooking if I do sauté and plenty of filtered of spring water - which I already do a good job of consuming.

Today's mondo salad: romaine lettuce, spinach, carrots, broccoli, cucumbers, tomatoes (yes, technically they're a fruit), red & green bell peppers, peas, boiled egg, mushrooms, almonds, sesame seeds, grilled chicken breast and for the dressing, balsamic vinegar and olive oil.

Sigh, tortilla soup from Baby's A's sounded so good today. I just keep telling myself that my longterm health is more important than a moment of carb and sugar loaded bliss. Yep, I'm not always convinved either...but I keep trying. Also, I find that the cooler it gets outside, the hard it is to eat cold salads. :-(
